District Parade & Rotary Chef's Dinner in Atlantic City
Past Charter Night
The evening was in many ways unforgettable. The sounds of spirituals from the prayer meeting across the way in counterpoint with the gentle jazz background provided for us by the Chuck Woodson Jazz Ensemble. Russ Mogavero, assistant district governor from Haddonfield, sending us on our missions like Henry V at Agincourt. Steak and salmon! And to top it off, in his foine Irish tenor, Art Campbell closing the night with a moving rendition of God Bless America.
Throughout, the theme was service, not simply the hors d’oeuvres that threatened to fill us before we got to the double entrée, but the service that club members provide, to the club, to the community, to one another. And so, before he passed the gavel to Bob Rank, Art paid homage to a number of members, as follows:
Debbie Chiaccio, who works for Tony Greenfield, for bringing order to our bookkeeping; Shirley Levitt, for helping out in Garden State Rotary booths; Marv Axler and Fred Levin for their work in successfully revising the Club by-laws; Joel Petchon, for overseeing once again the sale of Entertainment Books, a consistent fund raiser for the Club; Shawn Gallagher, for contributing to so many activities; Steve Novack, for his work on the raffle and in Club booths; Ted Levy and Bob Hardin for helping lead Garden State Rotary to its second LVA Spelling Bee title in three years; Rich Lees, tummler extraordinaire, for all his volunteer work; Claudia Sumler, for filling in faithfully as editor of the Wheel whenever necessary - which was often; Rich DeGrace, for selling a truckload of raffle tickets; Jimmy Horowitz, for his tireless work on the raffle and in membership activities; Marianne Tester, for her faithful service as the Club greeter; Alan and Ilean Stein, for everything they do to make the Club a better and more interesting organization; and the Egg Harbor Interact Sponsor, for selling the most raffle tickets of any outside group.
Five members were honored as Paul Harris Fellows, an unusually high number because of the large amount of money raised by the Club for the Rotary Foundation (Thanks, Alan!). They were Adrienne Cooper, Joe Eisberg, Pam Henshall-Mechanic, Nathan Seckinger, and this writer.
And 13 members were honored for perfect attendance: Marv Axler and Jimmy Horowitz, for the 17th year; Rich Lees, 16 years; Tom Veevers, 12; Jeff Schnepper, 11; Alan Stein, 7; Ilean Stein and Claudia Sumler, 6; Art Campbell, 4; Anita Zinsmeister, 3; Joe Eisberg, Steve Novack, and Bob Rank, 1.
It takes a lot to make a club successful. Fifty-plus members is a large and complex mix of individuals and personalities. What we have in common at Garden State Rotary is that we’re all here to give: to serve our community, to raise money so that we can give it to people and institutions that need it. We have fun along the way, too, and we had fun at Charter Night. Thanks for a great year, Art. Good luck, Bob!
