Current Projects
Coins 4 Kids
When filled with your spare change, a Coins 4 Kids carton holds enough to provide lunch for two children in schools near Nairobi, Kenya for a year, helping break the cycle of hunger, illiteracy, and poverty.
Coins 4 Kids is a joint project of International Paper's charitable foundation and the World Food Program (a UN agency). We have adopted it as an International Service project for 2006-07, in support of an initiative of the Rotary Club of Haddonfield. (A member of the Haddonfield club will match, dollar for dollar, the amount we contribute by November 24, 2006. Let's wring him dry!)
Family, friends, and associates can participate as well. Extra cartons are available at the Greeter Table.
To date, $400.00 has been collected in the "Coins for Kids" project.
Longtime member Claudia Sumler is leaving our club. She will be relocating to Maryland, where she will be employed by the Hartford County, Maryland Library. Good luck, Claudia!!! We will miss you.
Delores Oliver, a sophomore at Cherry Hill West High School, visited GSR's Friday meeting. Delores has a strong interest in the "Outbound Youth Exchange" program. She identified South Korea, Japan, and Argentina as the countries she would like to live in. Delores said she wanted to experience a different country for herself. She loves to learn about new cultures; the food the music, and the people. Spanish and Korean are the two languages she speaks in addition to English.
Please welcome our newest member, Nathan Seckinger. It's so great to have you return to the club, Nathan!
Last Week's Speakers
Last week’s speaker was district governor Alan K. Taylor. Alan received his master’s degree from Temple University. He has been married for forty-seven years. Alan has much versatility- he has been a math teacher, soccer coach and has performed in Carnegie Hall. His voice could definitely be heard above his fellow Rotarians, especially during the singing of “The Star Spangled Banner". The District Governor has been a Rotarian for forty-three years. His most life-changing event as a Rotarian was his trip to Brazil. “I had no idea of the horror out there", he said of his excursion. He continued with, “It’s unbelievable to imagine seven or eight-year old children being put out into the street." Alan reminded us that “Rotary is much more than the sum of its parts. Rotary builds from the bottom up, and service projects are paramount to our success as Rotarians."

Our District Governor is very committed to building a school in the Dominican Republic. Twenty-five to thirty thousand dollars is enough to make this happen. Theft is the biggest obstacle, because poverty is so rampant. However, he is confident that these issues can be resolved and a new school built.
Alan ended his presentation with a poem entitled, “Reverence for Life". He also reminded us that Rotary is truly an anti-terrorist group, and “Rotarians are constantly renewing life".
