Last Week's Meeting
--EJ Paul & Tom Veveers on The Shelterbox.
generally doing dangerous stuff above and below the sea all over the globe, he went and found all that was needed...tents, sleeping bags, boxes, equipment - the best quality, (with some arm twisting) at the lowest cost.
He put SHELTERBOX together, it's administered by the Helston-Lizard Club and sent worldwide through Rotary and International Relief Organisations... so it's all his fault!!!
The SHELTERBOX project is administered through the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard and in the USA by The Lakewood Ranch Rotary Club together with new partner clubs in Australia and Canada. It is distributed through Aid Agencies and Rotary Clubs closest to the disaster areas. Most of the funding comes as donations from Rotary Clubs around the world, as well as other organizations and individuals who have given great support to the project.
The cost of a complete Shelter Box is £490 sterling or $900 US. The boxes and new equipment are purchased as donations are received. All amounts are welcome and are used to purchase items toward a complete box. Best value is achieved by working closely with leading manufacturers, all items being obtained at less than trade prices! For donation suggestions together with the various equipment costs.

Subject: Need more Shelter boxes
Dear Tom,
Despite the over all situation in Mogadishu, we are gradually beginning to gain access to the IDPs and vulnerable groups there.
An important opportunity is presenting itself to doing some distribution of
shelter boxes.
Do you think there is a possibility of planning for around 10,000 boxes for us.
Regards,
Sid
Many of you familiar with the ShelterBox program are aware of our active partnership with the United Nations in their refugee relief efforts in Africa. ShelterBox has given this ongoing humanitarian initiative the name (and goal) of A Million in Africa (or AMA, for short), which signifies our intent to eventually shelter one million African refugees. It is estimated that there are 8 million homeless and displaced people in Africa, the large majority of them are women and children.
Let’s face it. Public response to natural disasters is as natural as the disaster. Positive and active response to recognize and aid the victims of man’s inhumanity to man has repeatedly proven much more difficult for us.
We are painfully aware that to a large extent, the western world only turns a temporary heedful eye to the inhuman situations these refugees find themselves in, only at the media’s whim. Their appalling lack of basic needs still exists whether we care enough to acknowledge it and act or simply choose to change the channel. The majority of us turns away not in indifference, but overwhelmed as to what viable difference one individual can make to relieve the suffering of so many left with so little.
Through the reputation and working relationship ShelterBox has established both with UNICEF in Somalia and UNHCR in Sudan, US Rotary clubs have a clear-cut opportunity to set a community example to “Lead the Way” in providing tangible and accountable relief aid in the form of ShelterBoxes. As proven and respected leaders in their communities, Rotarians are urged to readily share the emergency aid opportunity ShelterBox sponsorship provides with their associates, friends, family and other local organizations. Please help ‘Lead the Way’ with AMA now.
